Lot Description
1879-CC $1 MS64 NGC. Ex: GSA Hoard. Only a small percentage of the many thousand Carson City Morgan dollars in the GSA hoard were examples of the 1879-CC. This date is a rarity among CC dollars, despite having a substantial mintage of 756,000 coins. So many exist in circulated grades that there is no doubt this issue was actually placed in commercial channels at the time of issue. The opposite situation occurred in some later years, such as 1880, 1881, and 1885, when the Carson City mintage was smaller than for 1879, but the coins are frequently seen Mint State grades. This Choice Mint State specimen has full silver luster with reflective fields and frosty devices on the obverse, showing little toning on that side. The reverse is similar except it hosts ivory, gold, violet, and blue toning.
