Lot Description
1880-O Morgan Silver Dollar. VAM-6A. Top 100 Variety. 8/7. Ear Overdate. MS-65 (PCGS). OGH. Flashy and bright, with satiny luster throughout. The strike is sharp and the overdate feature can be seen with a strong loupe. As a date, the 1880-O is a extreme condition rarity, while this date and mint can be obtained for a price as high as MS-64, at the full gem level the population really comes to a halt with only 31 pieces certified by PCGS. The surfaces are clean and bright, save for a light glaze of gold toning which has settled in over the surfaces. A couple of minor scuffs on the cheek and truncation are present, but they are light and certainly within the normal handling evidence for a gem coin. The "Ear Overdate" mentioned in the VAM book refers to the tiny serif of the 7 seen above the upper left loop of the second 8 in the date. A formidable rarity at this grade level and certain to see considerable interest from all Morgan dollar specialists.
