Lot Description
1883-CC $1 MS68 PCGS. The GSA sales released vast numbers of Carson City Morgan dollars to the collecting public, and for the years from 1881 to 1885, government holdings of the Carson City issues amounted to either just under a majority (1881) to over four-fifths of the original production (1884). For the 1883-CC, over three-quarters of a million pieces were sold, over 60% of the mintage, and that figure was taken after the Treasury releases had concluded. While the Carson City dollars were not accorded any special treatment during the decades that they sat in canvas sacks in government vaults, they experienced a minimum of jostling in the meantime, and today, better-grade examples are not unusual in the numismatic marketplace. Choice and even Gem pieces are readily available, and acquiring an example at the MS66 level takes only a modicum of patience, should one not be too concerned about price or appearance. Identifying and obtaining a Superb Gem is a much greater undertaking, and finding a piece that transcends the MS67 designation is a rare event; NGC has certified no such pieces for this issue, while PCGS has graded only three examples at the MS68 level and none finer (11/08). The present piece is part of that tempting troika, exquisitely detailed with essentially flawless surfaces that show only a touch of cloud-white patina over parts of the fields. Virtually brilliant otherwise with magnificent eye appeal, and sure to be a stunning addition to the next collection that holds it. From The Sanderson Family Collection.
