This boldly lustrous specimen is sharply struck and aesthetically appealing with a whisper of pale champagne-gold toning at the rims. A rarity from the San Francisco Mint in Choice Mint State or finer in spite of its mintage of 6.25 million pieces. As noted in the Bowers reference (Whitman, 2004): "Following the run of numismatically-available San Francisco coins from 1878 through 1882, now with the 1883-S we encounter a key issue. In contrast with the earlier dates, the 1883-S is very difficult to find, especially at higher Mint State levels. Among 1883-S dollars, bagmarks are a significant problem. These must have been stored and handled roughly." The present coin is free of all but the most minor contact marks which seemingly sets it apart from many of its counterparts of the date. Choice for the grade and worthy of a premium bid.
