Lot Description
1884-S $1 MS62 PCGS. In higher Mint State grades, condition rarities abound in the Morgan dollar series, but there are only a few issues that are conditionally rare in lower Mint State grades. Among those are the 1895-O and, of course, the 1884-S. The mintage of 3.2 million coins suggests a date that is easy to locate. However, nearly all 1884-S Morgans entered circulation, and Mint State pieces survived purely by chance. There were no quantities of this issue in the Treasury Hoard of the 1960s. This splendid specimen is highly lustrous with frosty and fully brilliant, untoned surfaces. Trivial bagmarks are evident on each side, but they are entirely inconsequential. PCGS has only certified 50 finer examples of this issue (9/11).
