Lot Description
1885 $1 MS68 NGC. It would be interesting to learn the provenance of this special coin, from the day of its production until the present. Unfortunately, we do not possess that information. It seems doubtful, however, that the piece was left to languish for decades in a sealed bag, and more likely that it was quickly saved and carefully preserved, perhaps initially by a Mint employee. The 1885 is unquestionably a common issue, and more than 14,000 examples have been certified as Gems by NGC and PCGS combined. Well over 2,000 are known at MS66; and some 223 pieces have been designated at the Superb MS67 level. At MS68, however, only five coins have been seen--four at NGC and one at PCGS. Fully struck and brilliant, with intense cartwheel luster flashing from both sides, this piece is one to savor and appreciate for its unsurpassed technical and visual attributes.
