A noted condition rarity despite the generous mintage of well in excess of 10 million pieces, the 1886-O silver dollar becomes prohibitively rare above the MS-64 grade, in fact, NGC has not graded a single example higher (PCGS has graded a mere 3 coins higher), The lustrous near-gem example offered here has wonderful eye appeal, with only a touch of pale gold toning. The rarity of mint state examples of this date can be explained either by the fact that these all entered circulation and remained there for many years, fell victim to the melting pots of the Pittman Act, or a combination of both. Morgan dollar Registry collectors will be paying attention when this coin comes to the auction block.
