Lot Description
1888 $1 MS67 NGC. Throughout the 1880s, the Bland-Allison Act of 1878 guaranteed large production of silver dollars and this Philadelphia date kept pace with over 19 million pieces minted. Such large mintages resulted in overuse of some die pairs and early strikes when new dies were implemented, resulting in wide variations of quality depending on when the coin was struck. This brilliant, frosted Superb Gem was was obviously an early strike from fresh dies. The strike is full and deep. Smooth, silver-white surfaces show no die cracks, clashing, or other signs of die deterioration. It is important to note just one coin is graded numerically finer by either service (by NGC). Census: 77 in 67 (3 in 67 S), 1 finer (3/14). From the M L Moser Collection, #1 NGC Morgan Dollar Registry Set.
