Lot Description
1889-CC $1 AU58 PCGS. CAC. The 1885-CC and 1889-CC Morgan dollar issues are a study in contrasts. The 1885-CC was the last before the Carson City Mint closed for four years, and the 1889-CC was the first Morgan dollar struck after the hiatus. The 1885-CC, due to its abundant presence in the GSA sales -- more than half of the original mintage of 228,000 pieces -- is actually difficult to find in circulated grades. The 1889-CC had a recorded mintage of some 350,000 coins, but most were apparently melted later -- perhaps in the Pittman Act destructions around 1920. Circulated examples of the 1889-CC can be found, but problem-free midgrade (and especially high-end AU) examples are scarce and hotly contested. This is an attractive and appealing example for the collector. The mint luster is thin but almost complete over both sides, only interrupted by slight friction and a number of small abrasions, none of which are worthy of note. The strike is strong and each side has light gray patina.
