Lot Description
1889-CC $1 MS62 NGC. To produce the 350,000 pieces of the 1889-CC dollars, three different dies are known each for the obverse and the reverse of the 1889-CC Morgan dollars. On the most common obverse, there is a tiny die line, just about horizontal, that connects the large, leftmost oak leaf with the small corn leaf to its left. Another of the obverse dies has the 9 in the date somewhat higher than the other digits, about 15%, with the 1 in the date minutely doubled below the upper crossbar. Yet a third obverse die shows the date set further right than normal. Of the three reverse dies, one has a normal CC mintmark, one is set slightly to the right, and the third is tilted somewhat to the left, so that the top serif of the last C is quite near the right underside of the bowknot. The 1889-CC, although extremely elusive, is a fairly well-produced coin when found. Most boast a well-defined strike. Although Mint State examples are few and far between, many show prooflike surfaces on one or both sides, and even Deep Mirror Prooflike coins are seen. This example is brilliant throughout and strongly struck throughout. The mint luster is a bit subdued for a higher grade, and there are a few (actually very few) field marks on each side. From The JTR Collection.
