Lot Description
1889-CC $1 AU58 PCGS. The recorded mintage of some 350,000 pieces for the 1889-CC Morgan dollar can be completely discarded as irrelevant, according to Rusty Goe, who writes in his reference on the Carson City Mint that most of the mintage was "eventually melted," estimating that today between 11,000 and 16,000 pieces survive with perhaps half of those in Mint State, some 4,000 to 7,500 pieces. The 1889-CC is the hands-down key to the Carson City series, with the 1879-CC and 1893-CC distant second and third, respectively. Many of the surviving examples are, nonetheless, coins of remarkable quality and high eye appeal. This is a still mostly lustrous AU with just a hint of friction in the fields. Each side is remarkably free from any large or detracting abrasions. While much original brilliance still shows, there is a light covering of pale golden toning across each side.
