Lot Description
1889-O $1 MS 66 PCGS. This high mintage issue (11.8 million pieces), was both widely distributed at the time of issue and also paid out in bag quantities beginning as early as 1938. But the 1889-O is not known for its availability (which it is), but rather its poor striking quality. The result of this lack of details has the same effect, however, as a lack of availability, i.e., very few pieces qualify at the Gem level. This particular coin has a smooth, virtually unblemished cheek on the face of Liberty and the striking details are much stronger than the usual "pancake strike" this issue is known for. Brilliant throughout, the mint luster shimmers when held beneath a light. Population: 5 in 66, 0 finer (3/01). From the Gary Wolkwitz Collection.
