Lot Description
1893-CC $1 MS 65 PCGS. The 1893-CC has a low mintage of only 677,000 pieces, and it is an issue that is scarce in all grades, circulated and Uncirculated. Rolls of mostly substandard examples of this issue were available on an occasional basis until the 1970s, but very few quantity offerings have been available in recent years. Bowers relates that a bag of 1,000 pieces was released into circulation in Great Falls, Montana. This was at a time when these coins were worth $9 in Very Fine and $65 in Uncirculated. Over the years, we have noticed a tendency for '93-CC dollars to either have a flat-as-a-pancake strike or to be fully struck. There seems to be little middle ground on this issue. This particular piece is fully struck. Its surfaces are brilliant and highly lustrous with flashy, semi-reflective fields. There are very few abrasions on either side with the most notable ones being in the obverse field between stars 3 and 5, and a couple of shallow marks located on the cheek of Liberty. Only five other pieces have been so graded by PCGS (4/01), with none certified higher. From the Gary Wolkwitz Collection.
