Examination of the obverse and reverse finds light silver dominating the surfaces with a touch of delicate gold around the devices and periphery. The coin is sharply struck and shows little evidence of circulation beyond minor friction on the high points. No surface marks detract the eye, making this is a perfect choice for the date and mint collector seeking a high grade example. The diagnostic faint die line through the T of LIBERTY is present and the 1 is centered over a dentil, both features always seen on this prized rarity as all were coined from a single pair of dies. While the mintage of 100,000 might seem to be adequate, the number that are known today is substantially less, with perhaps five percent of the original issue surviving. An important example of this key date, destined to become the centerpiece of an advanced collection.
