Lot Description
1893-S $1 MS63 PCGS. The 1893-S is widely regarded as the key date to the series and locating an uncirculated example is a great challenge for the numismatist. Despite the mintage of 100,000 pieces, virtually all disappeared into the melting pots activated by the Pittman Act of 1918. This particular coin displays frosty white luster throughout and a hint of light peripheral gold. The strike is decent, with no signs of weakness on the ear of Liberty or the chest of the eagle. We note a scuff in the field below Liberty's chin and the eagle's breast has a minor scrape extending downward at an angle. The diagnostic die line is present in the T of LIBERTY, and this important die marker is present on all genuine examples. Tuning into the combined NGC and PCGS population reports, the paucity of mint state pieces becomes evident. In MS63 a meager 13 have been graded with a total of 21 coins graded higher. Certainly not many to go around for all the date collectors who desire to own a specimen of this premier date. No hoards or bags have ever been found, and even a well circulated coin is often the best that can be obtained by collectors. From The Dr. Hoffnagle Collection of Morgan Dollars.
