Lot Description
1893-S $1 AU53 NGC. Just the mention of an 1893-S Morgan dollar is enough to stir any series fan's blood, regardless of the grade. The issue has a cachet that is unique within the series, far more even than the 1895 proof, a coin that is unobtainable for many collectors. But the 1893-S is available in such a wide grade range, from AG3 to MS65 and (very seldom) finer, that nearly any numismatist -- even the most budget-minded (or wallet-challenged) -- can afford an acceptable example. While Bowers notes in various references that the 1893-S Morgan has an "average grade of Very Fine," that factoid disguises the wide grade range in which the coins appear. This is one of the finer high-end circulated examples obtainable. Much brilliance underlies the moderate blue and gray toning seen over each side. The strike details are strong and there are no obvious or detracting marks on either side.
