Lot Description
1894-O $1 MS64+ NGC. The Morgan dollars of 1894 from New Orleans saw a mintage of 1.7 million pieces. Quality control was apparently not a first priority as the issue was poorly struck and exhibited dull luster. Additionally, the majority of 1894-Os are heavily bagmarked. Consequently, locating an example that is decent or above average is a matter of luck. This high-end near-Gem is much better-defined than most examples, showing about one-third of the detail in the hair over Liberty's ear and a modicum of definition in the eagle's breast feathers (most survivors are totally flat in these areas). The luster is also attractive. The mostly brilliant surfaces display whispers of electric-blue and russet at the obverse margins. The reverse is impeccably preserved and the few minute marks on the obverse are well within the parameters of the grade designation. Truly an exceptional piece for this poorly produced issue. Census: 8 in 64+, 6 finer (8/13).
