Lot Description
1894-O $1 MS65 NGC. The Moser Collection is celebrated as the #1 NGC Registry Set of Morgan dollars, a remarkable assemblage of some of the finest survivors of this incredibly popular series. As befits a top-graded Registry Set, more than half of the 105-coin Moser Collection comprises issues for which there are no numerically finer examples certified at NGC. And more than a dozen series issues in the Moser Collection are pieces that are "pop 1/0" coins, the single finest certified at NGC. The present 1894-O Morgan dollar certified MS65 NGC is among those tied-for-finest issues, one of seven such submissions -- possibly not all separate coins -- graded at NGC with none finer. PCGS shows 11 submissions in MS65, and again there are none numerically finer. The 1894-O Morgan dollar is not a particularly low-mintage issue for New Orleans, having a production exceeding 1.7 million pieces. Most examples surviving today, however, are either well-circulated, heavily bagmarked -- or sometimes both. The typical survivor is around AU, with considerable signs of contact. Mint State examples of the 1894-O may be had for a price, however, and some of them show attractive luster. The Moser Collection coin is untoned and displays radiant cartwheel luster over each side. The cheek and neck of Liberty are clean overall, showing only minor contact under a loupe. The strike over the ear is soft as expected, but the satiny luster and excellent preservation give this piece a high eye appeal quotient that few survivors of this elusive issue possess. Census: 7 in 65, 0 finer (3/14). From the M L Moser Collection, #1 NGC Morgan Dollar Registry Set.
