Lot Description
1895-O $1 MS61 NGC. For Morgan collectors, a nice, Mint State 1895-O dollar is nearly as challenging as its more famous counterpart, the proof 1895 Philadelphia issue. Many advanced collections do not have one in any Uncirculated grade. Complicating matters is the task of finding an example with appeal, since most are poorly struck and have "dull, insipid luster" (as described by David Bowers). This MS61 representative will be a useful alternative for perceptive bidders. A significantly bolder strike than most of this issue reveals hair detail over the ear and breast feather definition on the eagle. Satiny luster floats on the untoned, pearl-white surfaces. A couple of small reed marks -- one in the left obverse field, the other on Liberty's cheek -- determine the assigned grade. Overall, this is an attractive, clearly Mint State example of the rarest New Orleans dollar. Census: 57 in 61 (1 in 61+), 49 finer (2/14).
