Lot Description
1896-O $1 MS64 NGC. Unlike later New Orleans issues, beginning with the 1898-O, where vast quantities of Uncirculated coins were kept in government vaults until the 1960s, no such hoards were ever found of the relatively high mintage '96-O and '97-O dollars. Add to that, the propensity for substandard strike and luster characteristics and these issues emerge as real rarities in high quality Mint State grades. This remarkably preserved example is satiny in appearance and virtually untoned. The strike is a touch sharper in the tell-tale areas than on the typical example and, save for shallow bagmarks on Liberty's cheek, surface marks are few and far between. One of only nine pieces so graded by NGC, as noted in their Census Report, with just three coins graded higher (6/05), confirming the rarity of this date in Choice Mint State.
