Lot Description
1896-O $1 MS64 NGC. The 1896-O Morgan dollar was not a well-produced issue, as the New Orleans Mint was concentrating on quantity rather than quality in the 1890s. A substantial mintage of 4.9 million pieces was achieved, but mint personnel spaced the dies too far apart in the presses in an effort to extend die life, and the typical example was softly struck with insipid mint luster. The majority of the mintage was released into circulation, and worn circulated examples are easy to locate today. The coins that were saved in Treasury vaults were roughly handled in storage, and excessive bagmarks are also a problem. Altogether, the 1896-O Morgan dollar is one of the most challenging issues of the series in high grade. This attractive Choice specimen exhibits a better-than-average strike, with sharp details in many areas and just a touch of softness in isolated spots, like the eagle's claws. The mostly brilliant surfaces are brightly lustrous, and show only minor signs of contact. A few hints of golden-tan and pink patina add to the strong visual appeal. Census: 10 in 64, 3 finer (8/13).
