Lot Description
1896-S $1 MS65+ PCGS. Morgan dollars struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1896 are very difficult to locate in the Gem level of preservation, and higher-grade specimens are extremely rare. PCGS and NGC have graded five 1896-S examples in MS65+ and only five finer. The present high-end Gem displays a melange of violet, aqua-blue, and yellow-gold toning residing on intensely lustrous surfaces. The design elements are well-struck, though the usual softness is seen in the centers. Both sides are well preserved. A shallow linear mark on the eagle's lower torso is mentioned solely for pedigree purposes. Population: 5 in 65+, 4 finer (12/13).
