Lot Description
1896-S $1 MS65+ PCGS. CAC. A crucial rule for numismatic newcomers to learn is that mintages do not tell the whole story of rarity, particularly condition rarity. It is easy for a novice to imagine that the 1893-S Morgan dollar is a rarity, for example, because its mintage is so low relative to its peers, but grasping how the 1896-S, with its mintage of 5 million pieces, can be conditionally rare requires additional sophistication. This MS65+ example is "a step above" a typical Gem, attractively lustrous with a modest but clearly visible cartwheel effect. Medium-silver surfaces show glimpses of gold-to-peach patina along the margins. The centers are softly struck, as often seen for the date, and roller marks are visible where the high points of the design did not strike out. Population: 3 in 65+, 3 finer (1/12).
