Lot Description
1897-O $1 MS 66 PCGS. To adequately appreciate this coin, read what Wayne Miller (1982) wrote about this issue: "The typical 1897-O is poorly struck, with inadequate luster and worse than average bagmarks." That may well describe the typical marginal Uncirculated '97-O, but it has nothing to do with the specimen currently being offered. This piece is sharply struck and the surfaces display rich, satiny luster characteristics. Also, we just haven't been able to locate a bagmark that could be used as a pedigree identifier or even one that could be located by the excellent photographs we use to promote major coins such as this. This upper-end coin is one of four pieces to have been so graded, and as incredible as it seems there are two other pieces that have actually been certified in MS 67 (4/01). From the Gary Wolkwitz Collection.
