Lot Description
1897-O Morgan Silver Dollar. MS-64 (PCGS). Boldly lustrous with a high degree of cartwheel activity, pale champagne iridescence, and a far finer than typical strike for the date. A notable Condition Rarity in the Morgan dolalr series, this despite a mintage of slightly more than four million pieces. No doubt the vast majority saw heavy circulation or else were melted under the provisions of the 1918 Pittman Act which stipulated that older silver dollars be melted. Usually available in grades up to and including MS-60 at a fairly nominal price, especially so for the well-circulated grades, but at MS-63 the date becomes a formidable rarity, and at MS-64, as here, or finer its absolute rarity goes unchallenged by even the most dedicated Morgan dollar devotees. Choice for the assigned grade, and a coin that maintains its dignity even under low magnification.
