Lot Description
1898-S $1 MS68 PCGS. Ex: Jack Lee 2. Like the 1897-S Morgan, the 1898-S is relatively easy to find in all Mint State grades through Gem MS65. Even those that grade MS66 are rather plentiful, but Superb Gem examples are extremely hard to find. Many surviving examples of this issue have moderate to heavy abrasions, and most are poorly struck, so here is a candidate for careful scrutiny. It is the only MS68 example of the date that PCGS has certified with none finer (11/11). It has fully brilliant silver surfaces and faint traces of lilac toning. Both sides have semireflective fields and attractive contrast, if not to a Prooflike level. Although shy of a full strike, this coin is far sharper than normally seen. Ex: The Sanderson Family Collection (Heritage, 1/2009), lot 5052.
