Lot Description
1921-S $1 MS67 NGC. The consignor of this coin and the MS66 NGC example in the preceding lot obviously obtained this coin from the same original roll. The NGC insert numbers are consecutive, and, even more importantly, both examples were struck from the same dies as evidenced by the myriad polish lines (as struck) around the reverse periphery. It is a rare occurrence to find the '21-S is any significant quantity because, while individual Mint State survivors are plentiful in today's market, rolls and bags are infrequently encountered. A newcomer to the NGC Census Report, this coin is the single finest certified 1921-S Morgan Dollar at the two major grading services (1/03). The obverse exhibits a razor sharp appearance, particularly over Liberty's portrait. The reverse, on the other hand, is a little softly impressed over some of the eagle's breast feathers and the leaves in the wreath. We stress, however, that the latter feature is not at all uncommon for the issue, and it pales in significance when compared to the strong technical merits displayed by the smooth, brilliant-white surfaces. A Superb Gem that belongs in the collection of a Morgan Dollar specialists who demands the ultimate in quality. From an East Coast cabinet.
