1840-O Liberty Quarter Eagle. Winter-3. Large O. AU-58 (PCGS). Brightly lustrous yellow-gold with pale olive highlights. Not noticeably marked to the unassisted eye. One of 33,580 quarter eagles struck in New Orleans in the first year of Christian Gobrecht's Liberty Head design type. The typical survivor of the date is apt to be VF or EF, with forays into AU and Mint State not as frequent as one might guess based on the mintage. Pleasing for the grade.
