Lot Description
1912 $2 1/2 MS66 PCGS. The 1912 Indian quarter eagle is an underrated date in high grade, despite the substantial mintage of 616,000 pieces. Currently, PCGS has certified only five examples in Premium Gem condition with none finer, while NGC has graded only two coins in MS66, again with none finer (6/11). Our Auction Archives reveal only two appearances of the 1912 quarter eagle in MS66 over the last two decades, including the spectacular PCGS-graded coin in the Los Angeles Signature (Heritage, 7/2009), lot 1234, which realized $37,375. The present coin is a sharply detailed Gem with lustrous orange-gold surfaces. The fields show only a couple of microscopic contact marks, and eye appeal is terrific. From The Shrike Set of $2 1/2 Indians.
