Lot Description
1859 $3 MS64 PCGS. The 1859 Three Dollar has an original mintage of 15,638 pieces, ninth highest in the series, and one would expect there to be quite a few survivors of this date. And this is true in lower grades, but above XF the 1859 is a very scarce issue. In fact, Akers ranked it as 12th in the series according to rarity by average grade. This piece has bright mint frost over each side with the usual semi-prooflikeness that is intermingled in the fields--a finish that is almost unique to this particular denomination. Well, but not quite fully defined, the bright yellow-gold surfaces display a slight overlay of reddish patina as well, assuring the viewer of this coin's untampered originality. Very few abrasions are present on either side, certainly none that warrant individual mention. Population: 7 in 64, 5 finer (1/03).
