Lot Description
1859 $3 MS62 NGC. Only three dates within the denomination are considered common, and this issue is not one of them. The 1859 three-dollar piece is priced at a relatively small advance over the most common issues, 1854, 1874, and 1878. At the same time, it is much scarcer in Mint State condition. Those three named common date issues have total NGC Mint State populations of 660, 566, and 2,293, respectively. The 1859 issue, on the other hand, has a population of just 78 coins in MS60 or finer grade. If they were the same price, which would you rather have, the 1859 or the 1878? This is a frosty Mint State example with excellent eye appeal. Splendid details are present, as they were from the start. A delightful example. Population: 19 in 62, 27 finer (12/04). Ex: Sotheby's (10/01), lot 327. From The Richard J. Chouinard Collection of United States Coins, Part One.
