Lot Description
1861 Three-Dollar Gold Piece. AU-50 (PCGS). Warmly patinated in an even medium-gold hue, both sides are uncommonly smooth for the grade in that there are no sizeable or otherwise individually mentionable abrasions. Sharply defined, as well, and very appealing in a circulated survivor of this scarce Civil War-era Three. One of only 5,959 pieces produced for circulation, extant examples of which thought to number fewer than 300 coins in all grades (per Bowers and Winter, 2005).
