Lot Description
1861 $3 AU58 PCGS. Here is another low-mintage issue that is elusive in higher grades. The total business strike mintage was a mere 5,959 coins, and only about 3% of those survive to the present day, nearly all circulated grades. This frosty near-Mint example has exceptional eye appeal that is the result of lustrous yellow-gold surfaces. Slightly deeper honey-gold color can be seen on the highpoints of the design. After this year, gold coins were no longer paid out at face value at the Philadelphia Mint, a situation that did not change for two decades. During the 20 years from 1861 to 1879, gold coins could only be acquired by paying a premium in paper money terms. From The Derrick Snider Collection.
