Lot Description
1868 $3 MS64 PCGS. With its mintage of 4,850 business strikes, the 1868 ranks as a mid-range issue in the three dollar gold series. It also has its share of attractive Mint State coins, as the present near-Gem proves. Its strike is crisp, with easily discernible strands of Liberty's hair and remarkable definition on the wreath. The yellow-gold fields are flashy, though not prooflike; they offer the powerful, slightly swirling luster of a later strike. Though a handful of tiny marks on and near the portrait preclude Gem status, this coin's overall eye appeal is undeniable. A delightful and interesting candidate for the series enthusiast or the type collector who seeks a slightly better date for a set. Population: 12 in 64, 7 finer (5/08).
