Lot Description
1872 $3 MS63 NGC. For a coin with a mintage of only 2,000 pieces, a surprising number were set aside (mostly AU, though) shortly after issuance. Most likely this is because, as the Bowers-Winter reference states: "By 1872 the $3 gold coin had become an anachronism. Examples had not been seen in circulation in the East and Midwest since 1861 ... " This is a well-preserved example that has bright, shimmering prooflike fields. In fact, we are surprised there is no Prooflike designation on the insert. The devices also are moderately frosted. The strike is a bit soft over the highest parts of the design, and there are only small, insignificant abrasions scattered over each side. Census: 2 in 63, 4 finer (3/12).
