1873 Three-Dollar Gold Piece. Closed 3. AU-58 (PCGS). A second example of an issue that under normal circumstances we hardly ever encounter, this piece is minimally worn and richly patinated. For the obverse we note vivid reddish-khaki color, but the reverse is overall bolder with subtle reddish-rose highlights to dominant sandy-gold patina. Both sides are equally bold in detail, and they also reveal ample evidence of a prooflike finish as the coin rotates under a light. Wispy abrasions include few that are singularly conspicuous to the eye. Another important bidding opportunity for the advanced Three-Dollar gold specialist.
