Lot Description
1873 Three-Dollar Gold Piece. Close 3. EF-45 (PCGS). Olive-gold toning with blushes of rose. This piece was prooflike at the time of issue and traces of the original mirror surface can be seen in the protected areas of the designs. This piece was from Stack's June 1990 Sale, Lot 677, where the cataloguer described it as: "The same die state as the Akers plate. The 'dished reverse' variety, the rarer of the two, and regarded by Akers as being Proofs of the Closed 3 issue." PCGS has certified "Closed 3" examples on only 64 occassions over the years.
