Lot Description
1888 $3 MS65 PCGS. In the penultimate year for the denomination, only 5,000 business strike 1888 three dollar gold pieces were minted. Melting may have further limited the supply of these coins per a comment by S.H. Chapman, "Of the later years of the $3, large numbers were remelted at the Philadelphia Mint." In spite of these circumstances, the 1888 is an available issue today, in the context of the series. Business strikes of this date frequently show a mixture of cartwheel luster and semi-prooflike finish in the fields, and the present coin is a good example of this combination. The strike is remarkably sharp for this issue, with nearly complete definition on all design elements. The bright yellow-gold color is accented by a faint, reddish patina on both sides. Population: 83 in 65, 30 finer (2/09).
