Lot Description
1888 $3 MS66 PCGS. CAC. While mintages for three dollar gold coins had been all but nominal in the years after 1878, the issues of 1887 and 1888 had significantly higher mintages -- 5,000 pieces in the case of the latter date -- which suggests at least a hint of elevated demand. By 1889, though, the denomination was back to irrelevance (and soon to be eliminated by coinage legislation). This Premium Gem hails from the penultimate year, a well-struck example with swirling and dynamic luster. Yellow, orange-gold, and peach shadings mingle on each side, and copper-red elements are present along the reverse rims. Housed in a green label holder. PCGS has graded only two coins finer (10/12).
