Lot Description
1862 1C PR66 S Cameo NGC. The Guide Book of Flying Eagle and Indian Cents notes that the 1862 is the most common proof date among the copper-nickel issues, possibly because the original mintage was saved and resold to collectors later, probably after the end of the Civil War. However, examples in Premium Gem or finer grades are still remarkably elusive. This piece sports wonderful cerise fields with lilac tints around the peripheral lettering on the obverse, and deep contrast. The reverse has more-typical sandalwood patina. Thoroughly appealing, fully struck, and justly meriting the Star designation. NGC has certified five numerically finer Cameo pieces (2/09).
