1879 5C PR67 Cameo NGC. Fletcher-1, PM-14.2. The circulation strike 1879 Shield nickels saw only 25,900 pieces produced, with a complement of 3,200 proofs. Both the Fletcher and Peters-Mohon references single out this proof variety as R.6 or extremely rare, Peters-Mohon describing it thusly: {blockquote}"Strong repunching is seen WEST, strongest on the '1.' Repunching is also seen on the inside of both loops of the '8' and is partially seen to the left of the upper loop of the '9.' Coin examined also shows a great deal of ejection doubling."{/blockquote} The above description perfectly characterizes this coin, with softly frosted grayish surfaces showing good contrast.
