Lot Description
1846 Liberty Eagle. AU-55 (NGC). Similar in both overall and high grade rarity to the 1845, the 1846 eagle (just 20,095 pieces produced) is typically offered no finer than EF. Even the discovery of several examples with the shipwreck of the S.S. Republic failed to appreciably increase the number of AUs available in today's market; there were only four to six (!) AU examples included in that find. This is one of the S.S. Republic pieces, both sides with bright yellow gold luster and appreciable prooflike reflectivity evident in the fields art more direct angles. Sharply defined throughout, and free of sizeable or otherwise individually distracting abrasions.
