Lot Description
1848-O Liberty Eagle. Winter Variety Two. AU-58 (NGC). One of the rarer New Orleans Mint Tens from the 1840s, the 1848-O has a limited mintage of 35,850 pieces and a poor rate of survival due to heavy commercial use. We offer here an olive-orange survivor with relatively bright surfaces that retain some of the original satin-to-semi-prooflike luster. Softly struck stars around the obverse periphery is a very common attribute for an O-mint Ten from the late 1840s, and there is also a touch of softness to the highpoint detail in and around the centers. Even so, the overall detail is suitably bold for the issue, especially in the presence of a bit of light wear. A few wispy abrasions in the upper-left obverse field are noted, but we see no other individually mentionable distractions. The 1848-O is similar in rarity to the 1850-O and 1854-O Small Date and is more difficult to collect than the 1843-O, 1844-O, 1847-O, 1851-O, 1853-O and 1858-O Eagles.
