Lot Description
1850-O Liberty Eagle. Winter Variety One, the only known dies. AU-58 (NGC). Honey-gold surfaces brighten considerably to more of a yellow-gold hue as the coin rotates under a light. The overall strike is suitably bold for an O-mint Ten from the late 1840s/early 1850s, and the centers are actually quite sharp even despite the presence of light wear. Wispy hairlines and other small abrasions are noted, but none are singularly distracting to the eye.
Very rare in Mint State, the 1850-O also represents an important find in AU-58. Clearly, this issue circulated widely and most examples from a 57,500-piece mintage were worn out and/or lost in circulation. The total number of AU and Mint State survivors establishes the 1850-O as the ninth-rarest New Orleans Mint Eagle in high grades.
