Lot Description
1854-O Liberty Eagle. Small Date. Winter Variety One, the only known dies. EF-40 (PCGS). OGH. 1899 Liberty Eagle. MS-66 (NGC). Rich olive-khaki patina blankets both sides and provides a rather original "look" for this lightly circulated ten. The central striking detail is quite sharp, while minor softness to the obverse stars is anything but unusual in an 1850s Liberty eagle, especially one attributed to the New Orleans Mint. Free of sizeable or otherwise outwardly distracting abrasions, this is a very appealing EF for the more frequently encountered date logotype of the 1854-O eagle. The 1854-O Small Date is still a very scarce coin in an absolute sense, of course, with Doug Winter (2006) accounting for only 150-175 survivors in all grades.
