Lot Description
1855-O Liberty Eagle. Winter Variety Two. AU-55 (PCGS). OGH. Original and very attractive, this rose-gold example retains plenty of vibrant, softly frosted luster despite having acquired light wear. Scattered abrasions provide somewhat of a scuffy "look" to both sides, but the only individually mentionable distraction is a short planchet streak (as made) in the right-reverse field. Boldly struck throughout, and sure to command a strong bid at auction.
A low-mintage delivery with just 18,000 pieces produced, the 1855-O vies with the 1852-O and 1856-O as the fifth-rarest New Orleans Mint Eagle in the No Motto Liberty series. This issue is particularly elusive in grades above EF, at which levels Doug Winter (2006) accounts for fewer than 20 different survivors.
