Lot Description
1864 $10 AU55 NGC. This eagle is one of a small number of near-Mint survivors available to today's specialists. As an issue, the business strike 1864 is slightly less rare than the 1863. Nevertheless, both the absolute and condition rarity of this issue is undeniable either within or outside of the context of the Liberty eagle series. Of greater importance than the typically encountered VF or XF survivor, the present specimen reveals traces of a prooflike finish in the protected areas. The balance of the surfaces are uniformly copper-gold in color with a somewhat scuffy appearance. An arc of small abrasions in the obverse field behind Liberty's neck should help establish this coin's pedigree. Census: 5 in 55, 3 finer (12/13). From the collection of Donald E. Bently, sold for the benefit of the Bently Foundation.
