Lot Description
1910 50C PR67 Cameo PCGS. Ex: Bruce Scher. Among business strike Barber half dollars of the Philadelphia Mint, the 1913 through 1915 issues are recognized as important rarities. What most collectors other than advanced specialists fail to recognize, however, are the rarity and importance of the 1910 half dollar issue. Four of the five lowest-mintage Barber half dollars were Philadelphia Mint productions. Those five issues include 1914, 1915, 1913, 1892-O, and 1910, from lowest- to highest-mintage. How this applies to proof coins depends on your perspective. Many collectors working on high quality Barber half sets may elect to add a Gem proof example to fill the Philadelphia Mint holes, given the elusive nature of business strikes. This creates added demand for proofs, above the demand from collectors of just the proof issues. This remarkable example has exceptional contrast between its lustrous devices and deeply mirrored fields. The coloration is mostly pale gold, with deeper russet and blue near the borders. The surfaces are exceptional, with no blemishes of any kind. This Superb Gem Cameo proof is tied for finest certified by PCGS. Population: 3 in 67 Cameo, 0 finer (8/09).
