Lot Description
1876-CC $10 VF25 NGC. Rusty Goe writes in The Mint on Carson Street concerning this issue, "To meet heavy export demand, the nation's gold coinage production increased sharply in 1876, fortified by bountiful gold discoveries in Nevada and other mining regions. By then the Carson City Mint was receiving only 25% of the deposits from the Comstock mines, most of it returned in the form of $20 gold pieces." The preference for double eagles meant that only 4,696 eagles fell from the presses in this Centennial year, although the survival is somewhat higher than expected in percentage terms--possibly due to the 1876 date. This piece shows pretty orange-gold coloration, with few abrasions and a decent strike.
