Lot Description
1881 $3 PR63 Cameo NGC. The three dollar denomination largely consists of low mintage issues. But even by the standards of the series, the production of the 1881 was exceptionally small. A mere 500 business strikes were coined, in addition to 54 proofs. The latter compares favorably, for example, with the 1888, which had a production of 291 proofs. Because the business strike mintage of the 1881 is minute, many Uncirculated survivors are prooflike, as they were struck from fresh dies. Proofs are readily distinguished from their commercial counterparts by the date location. The first 1 in the date is fully left of the first L in DOLLARS on the proofs, while business strikes feature the 1 in the date centered beneath the left edge of the L. The present boldly struck specimen exhibits radiant devices and has only unimportant hairlines throughout the flashy fields. From The Lake Highlands Collection.
